Hommage A Nesuhi

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

The most amazing box set and my fathers final project. A tribute to two Legends.

"HOMAGE A NESUHI - ATLANTIC JAZZ A 60TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION"

It is a very high end piece. 5 CD's
19 Lee Friedlander Prints
83 Page Book with notes by everyone ever ( including me and my brother )
Bookshelf design, with spine

it's essentially an audio book, its an art piece. Not a box set at all in the traditional sense.

My father put the finishing touches on this box set the night before he passed away. It was literally the last thing he worked on and by his bedside written in free hand were the final notes about Nesuhi ( pronounced ness-oo-ee ) signed by my father. Really amazing stuff. My father first wrote a letter to Nesuhi at the age of 14. Included in the box set is Nsuhi's first correspondence back to my father on official Atlantic Records stationary. Not only does the box set chronicle the amazing life and times of Nesuhi Ertegun it gives you a real clear window into my fathers body of work and a great sense of his love for the music.

My brother david wrote the forward and while not only quoting Alfred Lord Tennyson he manages to make a reference to a 3 point shot. Quite historic in that my brother watches about as much sports as you perform brain surgery on yourself. Somewhere my father is very very happy David is finally thinking about sports! ( no dave , golf does not count....sorry )

Many stories are told in the notes , one story you won't here is my fathers. This box was intended solely to be a tribute to Nesuhi. I think its an incredible piece of work. It really ultimately tells the two stories of two great men. One the master, the other the student who becomes the master. It's beyond fitting that my fathers great body of work is finalized by this. It's where it all started and its where it has come full circle. For the time being that is. His great work will live on forever, the great work of Nesuhi absolutely will live on forever as well. Nesuhi was easily the purest , most artistic record man ever. I'm so glad my father had a chance to learn under such a great master. It's touched my life in a way I can't explain in words.

Here is a link for more of a description about the box but its a seriously amazing piece of work and im very proud of it. My fathers love for the music, the people who made it and his painstaking attention to detail and respect for the art is what made him so special

A very special thanks to everyone at RHINO/ATLANTIC for making this happen with so much love and respect for both Nesuhi and my father Joel Dorn.

Background check:

Producer/musician Adam Dorn knows what he's talking about. The son of producer Joel Dorn, famous for working with the likes of John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, Adam grew up hanging around with Miles Davis and learning the trade alongside his prominent father. Now, under the moniker Mocean Worker (and yes that's pronounced motion, in case you were wondering) Adam Dorn has secured his own place in jazz and electronic circles with several well received albums and a ton of collaborations.

His career began in the late 90's after several semi-serious recordings became the debut LP Home Movies From the Brain Forest. Mocean Worker became a sought after name in the underground drum and bass circles. Soon after Dorn, a bassist at heart, found a dark jazz edge that only increased with time. Now Mocean Worker is making music his grandfather potentially listened to. Heavily influenced by big band and swing music, Mocean Worker's latest album, Cinco De Mowo, sounds like jazz from the 30's merged with varying degrees of Latin and funk medleys.

Ever moving away from the mainstream electronic music he began with, Mocean Worker still surprises, as with the recent single, "That One" a send up of the 2008 presidential election focusing on Obama and McCain's often ridiculous debate diatribes. Unlike his recent jazz subtleties, "That One" proves that Mocean Worker is still about experimentation and whimsical ambitions.

be well,

MOWO!™

so today I woke up to.....

Sunday, January 11, 2009

my brother texting me about the surprise victory of the Arizona Cardinals over the Carolina Panthers ( 10 point favorites )

his text read as follows.

"Arzina vs. San Diego Super Bowl - game day tickets available "

hahahahaha

I wrote back

"game subject to local black out rules"

Im sorry, but Arizona being in the NFC championship game is not a FEEL GOOD story. I really obviously want the eagles to win the NFC

I'd love to see them get a shot at either PITTSBURGH or BALTIMORE.... think it would be an amazing game. As would the Giants playing either of those teams ( although i dont want a rematch of GIANTS - RAVENS....that was a crap super bowl....these are better teams though )

wow........I LOVE FOOTBALL.....its always good to me , even when my team loses. Football loves me back.

Also, total side note, you know your vision is starting to go when you quickly glance at the headlines on yahoo's front page and you mistake "BATTLE HAMAS" for "BETTE MIDLER" maybe bette midler is like battling hamas but I just cracked myself up......need an eye check , although I do think Im on to something! hahahaha....

have a nice sunday america and enjoy the world wide webs :)

be well,

MOWO!™
